Ever meet someone in an unglamourous (coffee shop, car wash) setting and fall immediately, hopelessly, in love with them? That person is maybe not the best looking or best dressed in the room, but they have a certain je ne sais quoi (Morticia! That’s French!) that drives you to say something like “I Do”.

Soñando Vuelos (Dreaming Flights) is the first musical outing for Anna Estrada , an actress in the Bay Area theatre community. Mixed in with a plethora of serious roles, she’s had two appearances on “America’s Most Wanted” (not, one hopes, as a criminal). Lately, she’s been taking singing lessons and working out her musical chops.
The immediate vibe from this album is easy-going sincerity. So much of Jazz is packaged as sophisticated, urbane, or cutting edge and hyperactive. In this mix of Latin, Smooth and Pop-oriented Jazz, Estrada has managed to keep it real while still weaving a dreamy tapestry of musical influences. Continue Reading »

Ronald Patton (aka Ropatt) is a transplant who left the Detroit area, searching for the sun (and presumably, musical success) in the Golden State. While working on his own masterpieces, he co-founded Baywest Records and produced, co-wrote and arranged songs for other artists.

Steven Dillon’s been playing guitar since he was in short pants. By the age of 14, he was playing Bluegrass and writing songs for his 12-string. Upon hearing Van Halen play live, he made a right hand turn and spent years working on electric guitar licks.

Karen Johns must have one of those T-shirts that says “Been there, done that”. Looking at her bio, I can see that she’s been working on her performance skills since an early age. Her studies have taken her to universities in the US, Canada and Denmark. She’s won numerous competitions and scholarships. Johns has performed in dinner theatre and light opera productions as well as vocalist in an original rock band that she formed with her husband. Continue Reading »

Physics geeks like to distinguish between potential and kinetic energy…a ball on a table is all potential energy…a ball falling through the air has kinetic energy. The term “potential” is overused in the entertainment biz so I’m not going to use it here…Whitehouse is all kinetic energy. Listening to this CD is like taking the local express train to music Nirvana. Continue Reading »

Lindsay May seems to be a relentless self-improver (spunk! I hate spunk). She’s got a degree in Business and has attended innumerable songwriting workshops to hone her craft. In order to record this release, she traveled from Vancouver to Kelowna every other weekend for a year. This woman has obviously read about success and how it’s 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. It’s hard to understand why Jeff Jolly isn’t more popular/famous/rich than he is right now. This guy has talent to burn…he’s funny, writes great songs and music and plays some really good guitar riffs.
Starting out around 9 years old with a banjo, he discovered that “You Can’t Play The Blues on a Banjo” (his first song). From that relatively unpromising beginning, and having switched to a guitar, Jolly has grown up to open for the likes of George Thorogood, Little Feat, David Crosby and Elvin Bishop.

An ivory tower is considered to be a figurative place for mentally withdrawing from reality. I really like this concept as it applies to this release, “Red Hot”. Put this album on your turntable or 8-track, whoops, I mean CD player and close your eyes. You’ll think you’re cruising on down to the levee with Becky Sue.

When listening to a CD prior to reviewing it, I like to do different stuff…driving with the top down on a sunny day is one of those things. Driving from the ferry terminal to the bustling downtown of Victoria proved to be just the right amount of time to listen to Darryl Alexander’s release, “This Way”. Continue Reading »
